Dengue: Symptoms and Dengue

Dengue is an acute viral disease transmitted through infected female Aedes aegypti mosquitos. Aedes mosquitos have characteristics white markings all over the body. The World Health Organization (WHO) considered dengue a major global public health challenge in the tropic and subtropic nations. India alone reported 1,64,103 cases last year. It is amongst the most dangerous diseases because there is no cure for dengue yet, only symptomatic treatment is given.

Different forms of Dengue

There are four viral serotypes causing dengue DENV1, DENV2, DENV3, and DENV4. Infection with a combination of these serotypes have the potential to cause a chronic form of dengue leading to Dengue shock syndrome (DSS). This condition can cause severe organ failure, excessive bleeding, dehydration, and even death.

Symptoms of Dengue

When a single strain of DENV is responsible for transmitting the disease it is referred to as epidemic dengue. But mostly remains undetected if not properly diagnosed and confused with normal viral fever. Prime symptoms are headache, high fever, muscle pain, and bleeding of the eyes and nose. Another complicated form of dengue also exists called dengue hemorrhagic fever causing severe symptoms like abdominal pain, damaged blood vessels, Blood in the vomit, urine, and stool, and in some cases even death.

Diagnosis of Dengue

The following tests help in the determining dengue infection:

Blood test: Platelet cells act as hosts for DENV viruses, which in turn damage platelets. Dengue infection is also associated with low red blood cell counts. Hence, Blood profiling helps in judging early symptoms of dengue.

Antibody tests: IgG and IgM antibodies are produced by the immune system after the body is infected with dengue viral infection. These antibodies can be detected by IgG, IgM ELISA tests.

NS1 Antigen testing: Usually symptoms of dengue appear after 4 to 5 days. The presence of NS1 antigen in the blood helps in the early detection of DENV.
