The good and bad’s of cholesterol

The food we eat gets digested into simpler forms– fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, minerals, etc; together called macronutrients. Then these macronutrients get absorbed directly or indirectly depending upon the bodies’ requirements. Excess macronutrients usually get eliminated or stored in different parts of our bodies. For example, carbohydrates as glycogen, and cholesterol as fats. Studies have shown, that the extra depositions of any kind of macronutrients are the root causes of different disorders like heart complications, diabetes, PCOD, etc.

As the title suggests, we will be focusing on cholesterol in this article. Cholesterol is a waxy substance (lipoproteins) secreted by cells and obtained through food. These are of three types;

  1. LDL(low-density lipoprotein): Also known as bad cholesterol because they tend to deposit on blood vessels blocking the passage of blood. This might lead to high blood pressure. In severe forms, they lead to heart attack, stroke, etc. These are obtained from junk food, full dairy, and red meat.
  2. HDL (high-density lipoprotein): First, come firsts, Not all types of cholesterol are bad. HDL are the “good cholesterol” because it tends to deposit LDLs in the liver & from there it gets eliminated from the body. Eggs and fatty-fish, nuts and berries are good sources of HDL.
