Tobacco nearly kills 1.3 million Indians each year, which accounts for half of its users. Tobacco is consumed in many smoke as well as nonsmoke forms. The statistics related to tobacco consumption are heartbreaking. India is the 2nd largest consumer and 3rd largest producer of tobacco after China. Tobacco consumption is considered a “man-made epidemic” that has affected the entire world.

Epidemic, difficult to control

This man-made epidemic has reached every bit and corner of Indian households because of its cheap cost and easy availability. Heavy advertising is another reason for its popularity, attracting specially youth for higher revenue collection. Before we take tobacco, we should be aware that nicotine is as addictive as heroin and cocaine.

Dangerous for all

A person dies every 120 seconds from tobacco consumption. It’s a dangerous habit because it not only affects the purchaser but also targets non-tobacco users. Tobacco has more than 250 harmful chemicals, out of which at least 69 are cancer-causing. Implications of passive smoking and third hand smoking are also severe. Passive smokers tend to inhale unfiltered smoke which ultimately leads to harmful chemical toxicity. Third-hand smoking also leads to grave consequences, the smoke is absorbed directly from the skin leading to health implications.

Dangerous for all

If you are a smoker and want to quit, start today, start now. Regular smokers should undergo chest X-ray, ECG, Fasting Blood Sugar, HbA1C, and Vitamin D investigations periodically to keep a check. If not the conditions can become worst. Given below are a few repercussions of tobacco consumption;

    • Cancer: Basically, smoking causes all types of cancers. About 90% of cancer deaths are related to lung cancer. Tobacco chewing majorly accounts for mouth ulcers and in severe cases mouth cancer.
    • Lung diseases: Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging your airways and the small air sacs (alveoli) found in your lungs. If you have asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack.
    • Heart diseases and stroke: Tobacco users are at greater risk for diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular disease). Smoking damages blood vessels by making them thicker and narrower. Ultimately causing high blood pressure.
    • Green tobacco sickness : Workers engaged in tobacco cultivation suffer from an occupational illness known as green tobacco sickness (GTS), an acute form of nicotine toxicity resulting from the absorption of nicotine through the skin.
    • Infertility: Smoking can also affect men’s sperm, which can reduce fertility. In women, it increases the risks of birth defects and miscarriage.
    • Tobacco degrades your teeth and gums.
    • There are number of reasons why tobacco degrades our environment. Tobacco depletes the soil’s nutrients, damaging the soil. Smoke causes air pollution. Tobacco comes in plastic packets, which are non-biodegradable.
